About the Library

The Central Library of GKU was established as Library of Guru Gobind Singh Polytechnic College, Talwandi Sabo in the year of 1998. Later on, other two libraries of Guru Gobind Singh College of Engineering, and Guru Gobind Singh College of Education merged into the Central Library at the time of establishment of Guru Kashi University in the year of 2012.

GKU has well stocked library with 981.75 sq.m area and has a collection of 67570 books. It includes a large section of expensive encyclopedias, reference books and a number of textbooks related to the courses being run in the University.

Library system also offers ICT based resources to its users, such as e-books, e-journals, databases. The E- resources subscribed by University Library are EBSCO, SCC Online, DELNET, Shodhganga, KNIMBUS, Manupatra, Law Herald etc. Library system subscribes to a number of journals, magazines and newspapers.

The whole collection of the library is computerized and its OPAC is electronically accessible. The computerized bibliographic information of the library holdings has also been available for users’ searching throughout the campus through Local Area Network (intranet) using ERP.

Central Library of the University also manages an Institutional Repository for theses and dissertations. Besides books, library system also possesses rare book collection, special reports, reference sources etc. Library has fully air conditioned and Wi-Fi enabled building and reading hall with a capacity of 150 seats with 20 internet labs equipped with world class facilities.

GKU central library has CCTV Security system and has elevator for physically handicapped users and staff. It has a power back-up of Solar PV Power Plant to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Automated circulation system using barcode technology is being used which provides easy and prompt service to the users. Library has been providing lending and reprographic services; also, orientation progammes for newly admitted students of all academic departments are conducted every academic session.

The Central Library is established on the third floor of the Administrative Block of this university. Dr. Jagtar Singh is the Chief Librarian. The library is dedicated to collect, process, preserve, and serve printed and electronic materials to facilitate teaching, learning and research in the university.

Sections of the Library

Technical Section:

Technical Section processes the collection of documents of the library into serviceable units. This is achieved by performing mainly two functions, namely classification and cataloguing. The other function is physical preparation of the documents. In this library, the books are assigned class numbers according to Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme 22 nd edition. The Catalogue is being prepared according to AACR-II. After completing the technical processing of the documents, these are sent to the stacks for circulation and use by the readers. OPAC is available in this for searching the documents.

Circulation Section:

Circulation section is one of the most important sections in the library as it is the gateway between users and documents. This section handles maximum services apart from the provision of lending and renewal of books, services such as registration of library members, issuing of no dues certificate and maintenance of statistical information pertaining to the library use. The circulation also provides OPAC system where users can search the holdings of the library materials. The timings of issue and return of books are 9:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on weekdays.

Reference Section:

This section maintains the reference sources for in-house use by faculty and students. It consists of materials that are meant to support teaching, learning and research by providing quickly accessible information. The reference sources comprise of dictionaries, encyclopedias, bibliographies, directories, atlases, etc. This section also maintains government publication, reports, statistical information, etc. New entrants to the university are initiated to library use in the beginning of the academic session.

Periodicals Section:

Periodical section provides current information to the library users. At present, 40 print journals & magazines and around 23000 e-journals have been subscribed by the GKU central library. The opening hours of the section are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The major work involves placing and processing of subscriptions for print journals and e-resources. The library subscribes journals for different academic departments including National and International journals with 23 newspapers and magazines. These periodicals are displayed in the racks and can be consulted but they are not for issue. However, users can take a photocopy with the prior permission of the concern staff.

Reprographic section:
This section provides photocopying service to the library users.
The Internet Lab:

Library has a computer lab which includes 20 networked workstations. Users can access various e- resources and do their project work in this lab. It also facilitates the other computer system of the library. This section is the most vital section in the library as it serves as a gateway to external resources and services. It is also used to train information seekers in the use of e-resources.

Theses and Text Books Section:

Library has a Thesis Section which includes PhD theses, M.Phil., M.Sc. and M. Tech dissertations. This section also has six monthly Industrial Training reports. It allows access to text books, theses, rare books, manuscripts, and backfiles of newspapers. This special material is not lent out for home use. Text books reading facility is available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on five days a week.

Library Services

Lending – Automated Circulation system using ThinkNext technologies.
Library orientation programme for fresh students every year. Reference Service provides the users with directional assistance in locating books and resources.
Computerized bibliographic catalogue search facility is provided throughout the campus using ERP.
Access to e-resources.
Access to Institutional Repository of electronic theses.
SMS & e-mail alert system for every transaction to the users i.e. issue, return, renewal, etc of books with necessary information. For overdue books, reminder is sent to the user along with the fine amount.
Reprographic services: University Library provides reprographic services to the users for photocopying library materials
Inter-library Loan (ILL): Assistance to access materials and resources from the networking libraries through DELNET.

The University's Library system provides variety of E-Resources & Databases to the users to supplement their teaching, learning and research activities. It contains judgments of Supreme Court of India, High Courts of Indian States, Tribunals, Commissions and Commission and Committee Reports, Gazette Notifications, Circulars, Bare Acts, Rules and Regulation, Ordinance and Pending Cases and Legal material on subject based research. It provides comprehensive search techniques including Manu Search, Legal Search, Citation Search and Act Search. SCC Online is a product of Eastern Book Company primarily providing Supreme Court of India Cases publishing in SCC Weekly. SCC Online is known as most authentic source for SC Judgments due to its case notes and effective search. Other than cases, SCC Online coverage includes Articles published in SCC and Practical Lawyers, Central and few coverages of States Legislation, Law Commission of India Reports and Selective Judgement of High Courts of Indian States. Its products include EBSCONET, a complete e-resource management system, and EBSCOhost, which supplies a fee-based online research service with 375 full-text databases, a collection of 600,000-plus eBooks, subject indexes, point-of-care medical references, and an array of historical digital archives.

Institutional Repository

GKU Central Library of the university also manages a Knowledge Repository for theses and dissertations. Soft copies of M.Phil. Dissertations and Ph.D. Theses in the form of CDs are deposited in this section. CDs with books, census reports, gazetteers are also available. Students, researchers and faculty members can have access to these CDs in this section. All computers in the library have proper internet facility so that users can access theses on lab computers in the library.

Library Automation

The University Library is fully automated with ThinkNext software in which functions from cataloging to security protocols are integrated. The acquisition, cataloging, circulation, serials controlling, catalog access and security protocols come under the purview of automation. The Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) system in the University Library enables searching through clusters like Author, Keyword, Subject, Class, Title, Publisher, Place of publication, Main entry, Material type, Place of conference, Subject name, ISBN / ISSN, Series titles, Serial title and Year of publication. It also supports circulation, acquisition, front desk operations, Serials Control and data entry in vernacular languages.
